Attack of the killer white labels

Posted at 8:00PM on Saturday, May 17, 2008 in area 51 and hf and jane in space and lumpy gravy radio show and wbcq.
We're diving into recent music acquisitions here, and as you may be able to tell from the past couple of shows we're featuring some of the most bizarre and obscure vinyl offerings. Superior shortwave reception today on both WBCQ 7415 and 5110.

Conceptual contunity for this show: Lauren Wood aka Chunky aka Ilene Rappaport is the Chunky of Chunky, Novi and Errnie we played today. Chunky and Novi had various associations with Frank Zappa throughout the years.

The tracked marked * are mono recordings electronically reprocessed to give stereo effect on stereo equipment.

  • Wild Man Fischer - I'm the Meany
  • David Bowie - Karma Man - The World of David Bowie (Decca UK SPA.58 1970)*

This soaked episode came about on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 2200 UTC on WBCQ 7.415 and 5.110 MHz. There's more than enough conceptual contunuity for you here, including yard sale vinyl, a Link Wray cover, and poor ol' Blue Boy got busted again on the radio. And, of course, a Jane song by the Birdwatchers. Is this phase one of Doc's Brain?

Slopbucket eliminator, the way I feel

Posted at 7:23PM on Saturday, April 12, 2008 in area 51 and hf and lumpy gravy radio show and wbcq.

There's lots of live vinyl in this one; for the first time we ran some selections directly off the turntable. We had to feed WBCQ by telephone today, but conditions were excellent on 7415. 5110 is starting to get a bit noisy at this time, but we could copy it good here as well. This went out live on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 2200 UTC, on WBCQ 7.415 and 5.110 MHz.

Note: Jane and Jean were both determined to be Popes today, and Jane says they need to get together and DO SOME POPIN'.

Some more show notes: Allan has switched WBCQ 15420 back to 17495 because of all kinds of interference, Jay called Allan last night at about :48 into Al's show, and some hams on 3886 the other night were asking Timtron when Marcie's gonna get back on the air and do some more Mae West bits."Make like horse shit and hit the road" closing Tim's show tonight, a repeat from last September. Posted at 10:38AM on Sunday, March 30, 2008 in area 51 and hf and lumpy gravy radio show and wbcq.
No sign of jammers on 7415 this evening as we tossed this radio show out into the air. 5110 was bothered all evening but still there for the whole Area 51 experience for us. Jane chose some sappy and strange vinyl for today's show, interspersed with listener requests and live phone calls.

This one is a warm-up for our RNI marathon planned for Sunday evening. We'll be going live on the internet at 7PM (128K stereo MP3 and 32k mono aac plus) and live on WBCQ 7415 shortwave from 8 to 11.

Zappa Head

Posted at 11:36AM on Sunday, March 16, 2008 in area 51 and hf and lumpy gravy radio show and wbcq and zappa.

Back before we did a show for WBCQ, I did a handful of shows for Dr. Becker's FM station in Kiowa that featured Zappa's material. Four years later we've come full circle. Here's a mix that we pushed forth onto the airwaves at 2200 UTC on Saturday, March 15, 2008, on WBCQ 7.415 and 5.110 MHz.

After hours, we discovered that Brad has a better sounding and more complete soundboard recording of the Fillmore West concert where our feature "Call Any Vegetable" originated from. It is one of my all time favorite Zappa shows, and the original "tape that Jane used to use to annoy the neighbors." When we get a copy of Brad's tape we'll post it here for you, and maybe we'll air it on Area 51 someday soon.

This show happened at 2300 UTC on Saturday, February 2, 2008 live on WBCQ 5.110 and 7.415 MHz. Conditions are slowly improving, and we got out far and wide once again, although 7.415 is still skipping long at this time of day. This one went out to the world on 7.415 and 5.110 MHz at 2300 UTC on Saturday, January 12, 2007. This all-vinyl show includes a call from Bill. Good conditions on shortwave early in the Area 51 block with Liquid Radio at 2200, but both 5110 and 7415 were fading out and soon gone by the time Lumpy Gravy came on. David in Louisiana was getting us on 7415, though.

Relax and float downstream

Our second live hour quickly turned into a free form exploitation of WBCQ 5.110 MHz on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 0000 UTC. This was great fun, as we interactively took vile and twisted requests from our various co-conspirators, associate producers, and other malcontents. Signal on 5110 was excellent for this show.

Our latest episode was broadcast live at 2300 UTC on Saturday, December 8, 2007, on WBCQ 7415 and 5110! Voice of the M/S Katie

The first "test transmission" broadcast started at midnight on 9/11. It was a lot of fun. We came on 5105 after Jason's friend Derek's "Squad 51 Country" ended at midnight.

Dr. Becker and I created the unique interval signal for our M/S Katie broadcasts about a half hour before we went on air for the first time. The interval signal consists of sound byte snippets from a Traffic concert in 1970, Thomas Dolby's "One of Our Submarines," and Ike, Kyle's baby brother from South Park.

Did I mention that this broadcsat was a lot of fun?
