  • Fri 10/5 8pm ET 0000 UTC Allan Weiner Worldwide at Monticello

Wednesday, July 12, 2006, 2100, 7415. The Voice of the M/S Katie returns to WBCQ with music from Stevie Ray Vaughan and lots of WBCQ jingles. Dr Becker IDs at 2105. "It's raining and there are leaks all over the boat but that's not gonna stop the music" at 2107. "Send me some beer" at 2132. Stevie Ray Vaughan.. man, that guy kicks ass!" at 2154.

A fine signal here in Maryland, 444.

We made Monitoring Times

Posted at 6:20PM on Sunday, October 23, 2005 in hf and m/s katie and rfma and wbcq.

In the November 2005 issue of Monitoring Times I picked up yesterday at Borders, George Zeller reports in his excellent "Outer Limits" column on a QSL for our M/S Katie broadcasts this summer that we sent to Jerry Berg. George notes that the QSL originated from Radio Free Mount Airy. Cool!

By the way, I highly recommend this publication. It's very well done, and is always a very interesting read. I know I could save a few bucks by subscribing, but as a bookworm, I enjoy surfing through the Borders while looking for the new MT, 2600, Granta, etc.

Summer vacation

Posted at 8:42PM on Monday, July 18, 2005 in m/s katie and wbcq.

Here we are, a bit scraggly, after spending seven days on WBCQ's flagship the M/S Katie in Boston Harbor. What a great vacation!

Voice of the M/S Katie is alive

Posted at 11:00PM on Thursday, July 7, 2005 in hf and m/s katie and wbcq.

Friday, July 8, 2005, 0300, 5105. After a long broadcast of the Good Friend Radio Network from 0100? on, I hear the Jetsons theme and Ten Years After on 5105. At 0313, a commercial for Fatima long cigarettes followed by the infamous Amos and Andy chicken sound byte compilation by Complex Variables Studio, "I been standin' out in front and I ain't seen no chicken!" Also heard the Hal Turner quote "Place your chicken in the pot" followed by Allan Sherman and the Black Eyed Peas. Some sound bytes and various music followed, including the long theme from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and more from Ten Years After.

Great sound quality as usual for 5105. Overall signal 544 with occasional fades.

It's most excellent to hear life from Boston Harbor.

Floating in a boat

Posted at 9:20AM on Friday, July 1, 2005 in hf and lumpy gravy radio show and m/s katie and wbcq.

Our 41st show was transmitted live from the deck of the boat tied next to the Motor Sailor Katie at the Bang Corporation Shipyard in East Boston, Massachusetts. It was near record heat, approaching 95 degress, on this day, so we broadcast from the deck of the closest ship with some shade instead of down in the Katie's studio. We streamed audio to 11l-rni.net, and this webcast was relayed by WBCQ on 7415 at 6pm eastern time on Saturday, June 25, 2005. This was a unique setup with Timtron's computer as the source, Michael's Mackie mixing mics and sounds, and my computer sending the audio to the 'net via our broadband cellular modem. The show was not without its technical farts and glitches, as the aircheck will tell.

The audio content for this show came completely from Tim's archives. However, just as we were preparing to start Tim's show, his computer crashed badly and had to be dropped offline to cool down for a while. So, as fate would have it, much of the music for Tim's show came from my archives. Truly produced by accident and directed by mistake. A most excellent time.

Allan, Dr. Becker and I provided a big hello to our listeners after a broadcast of the classic Radio Morania pirate transmission. Our internet connection started to fuzz out at around 9:10pm, and by 9:20 or so Jen had switched 5105 to a simulcast with Marion's Attic on 7415.

Posted at 3:45PM on Saturday, September 11, 2004 in area 51 and hf and lumpy gravy radio show and m/s katie and pirates and wbcq.

Voice of the M/S Katie

The first "test transmission" broadcast started at midnight on 9/11. It was a lot of fun. We came on 5105 after Jason's friend Derek's "Squad 51 Country" ended at midnight.

Dr. Becker and I created the unique interval signal for our M/S Katie broadcasts about a half hour before we went on air for the first time. The interval signal consists of sound byte snippets from a Traffic concert in 1970, Thomas Dolby's "One of Our Submarines," and Ike, Kyle's baby brother from South Park.

Did I mention that this broadcsat was a lot of fun?
