Zappa Head

Back before we did a show for WBCQ, I did a handful of shows for Dr. Becker's FM station in Kiowa that featured Zappa's material. Four years later we've come full circle. Here's a mix that we pushed forth onto the airwaves at 2200 UTC on Saturday, March 15, 2008, on WBCQ 7.415 and 5.110 MHz.
After hours, we discovered that Brad has a better sounding and more complete soundboard recording of the Fillmore West concert where our feature "Call Any Vegetable" originated from. It is one of my all time favorite Zappa shows, and the original "tape that Jane used to use to annoy the neighbors." When we get a copy of Brad's tape we'll post it here for you, and maybe we'll air it on Area 51 someday soon.

The Crystal Ship
Sunday, June 17, 2007, 0143, 6875 am. Pigmeat, with nice music. Zappa's Valley Girl at 0146. A song by the Cars at 0150. Burbles interfereing at 0154. Variably fading down to noise levels by 0156. By 0205, reasonably steady at s9. Crystal Ship ID at 0240.
SIO 533, strong s9 signal washed out by weird propagation. Nice audio, the lows and highs are very perceptible.
The things you find in old comic books
Here is page 17 of Captain America 100, published in April 1968 by Marvel Comics.
Heh. What wonderful pop art to accompany Cap's battle with Baron Zemo. "You must buy all of these products NOW!"
Opie the wonder boy?
This assault of the airwaves was originally broadcast on Saturday, March 26, 2005, at 2300 UTC on WBCQ 7.415 megaweiners, and slimulcasted on 11l-rni.net and 975pirateradio.com and wbcq.com. Yowza.
Timtron played "Sole Survivor" by Asia at 0021 Su 3/27/05. By coincidence this very song was one of our warm up tunes last week. Way cool. Tim's show rules and is our favorite on WBCQ.

A big load of V1YnL
A couple of weeks ago I was given the role of caretaking for an album collection, which will no doubt blend into the Big Pile we have here. Jane's brother Mark ran out of room for these, so they're here now and we're gonna play as much good stuff as we can from them. Many of these LPs are from Jane's collection, which explains all the girly stuff. As far as we can tell there's at least three girl collections in this mix, man. Requests for songs to play from this list on Lumpy Gravy are most welcome.

What is Lumpy Gravy?
While surfing, I came across a most excellent web site that has made available, in it's entirety, Chris Federico's excellent Zappology, A Detailed Listen to the Music and Lyrics of Frank Zappa. The Zappology is arranged by album release, and a detailed analysis of the Lumpy Gravy album is well worth the read. This will hopefully provide some more insight into the whys and wherefores of our radio show.
Gimme that ol' time religion
Here is the setlist for our latest irregular, broken and twisted assault of the airwaves. This one was originally broadcast at 2300 hours UTC on Saturday, January 8, 2004, on WBCQ 7.415 MHz shortwave worldwide.
Update 6/3/06: This was a really fun show. We garbled it up a bit on air at times; I blame it on 420 and the fact that we weren't really quite comfortable with live radio yet. The subject matter was almost overwhelming, and after the intro we were blown away. Transpositioning "Southern California Brings Me Down" with Mormons and Hard Right Evangelists and Brother Scare was quite fun. What else can I say. Let this one stand on it's own.

01 Frank Zappa - Uncle Remus - Apostrophe'
02 Frank Zappa - The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution - Sleep Dirt
03 Frank Zappa - Penis Dimension - Freaks & Motherf*#@%!; also on Tengo 'na Minchia Tanta (Exact date and location not known, probably Fillmore East or West, 1970). This jam is credited on the liberated bootleg on Foo-Eee Records as consisting of Little House I Used To Live In > Mudshark Variations > Holiday In Berlin > Sleeping In A Jar > Cruising For Burgers. I like the short title "Penis Dimension." When I lived in a small house deep in the woods in Montgomery County, Maryland, my wife would play this suite at full volume to upset the neighbors. It contains my favorite guitar solo of all time. It is also the only version of Holiday In Berlin with lyrics describing the event the band experienced while on tour in Germany that inspired the song.
04 Frank Zappa - You Didn't Try To Call Me > Petroushka > Bristol Stomp > Baby Love > Big Leg Emma - 'Tis The Season To Be Jelly (Konserthuset, Stockholm, possibly September 30, 1967)

Grateful Zappa
A strange coincidence this evening on our radio Obscura ~ the frop in Bob's pipe ~ Maharishi Charms ~ Happy Girl Cigarettes ~ Wake and Bake audio stream. - Frank Zappa - Dead Girls of London [original L Shankar version from the "Leaterette" bootleg]
- Grateful Dead - Viola Lee Blues [from the "live dead" quasi-bootleg, c. 1966]

Frank Lives
Lost Discs Radio started a surf music show this afternoon with a snippet from "We're only in it for the money", and three hours later on Tasha's show, her second musical offering was "Father O'Blivion" seguing into classical Zappa. About 45 minutes later we were treated to a live "Concentration Moon" with the Flo & Eddie band. It's an awesome start for the weekend to hear diverse FZ material on the airwaves.
